Rating: 5 (out of 5)

AKG K702 Getting exceptional sound quality from a headphone that was reasonably priced was the aim of AKG when they created the K702. All indications are that they not only managed to achieve this, but also exceed the standards set by even the best headphones in this price range.

The AKG K702 open-back reference headphones are a joy to listen too, and whether you are a home audiophile or professional in the studio, you will get a lot of benefit from wearing these headphones as far as audio quality goes.

Most good quality headphones usually sound better at certain ranges, for instance they may produce very high quality bass, but the highs might be lacking slightly. But the AKG K702 seems to have found the sweet spot for the entire range of sounds they produce.

They do not seem to sound better for one type of music over another, you can get the same high quality whether you are listening to a rock band or an orchestra. This is quite a rare quality, especially for a pair of headphones in this price bracket.

Technical aspects of the AKG K702 headphones

The AKG K702 headphones are open-back, meaning they do not contain the sound directly in the ear cup. This means that you will get some element of external noise coming through (although very little with these), and people outside can also hear the audio that is playing through the headphones. So they are really a headphone to use in a more private setting, rather than on the train while plugged into your iPhone.

The flat wire voice coils used in the AKG K702 help to provide a very accurate and agile response, and also a spacious feel to the audio. This gives you the feeling like you are actually in a concert listening to the music, it is quite impressive how well this works.

The patented Varimotion two-layer diaphragm is also an integral part of the setup of the K702 headphones, and these provide a more out-of-head imaging quality to the sound. This means that some aspects of the audio feels like they are further away, which is how they get that concert feel to them. This really is an effective piece of technology and very impressive to listen too.

The detachable cable on the K702 is 3 meters long and has a mini-XLR locking connector. It has aAKG K702 review gold plated 1/4β€œ stereo jack and also comes with a ¼” to 1/8” adaptor too. The quality of the jack is just another positive link in the chain to producing the high quality sound.

Design and comfort

The foam and velvet 3D ear pads of the AKG K702 headphones are specially shaped to optimize comfort levels. They are quite large, but the open back dynamic of the headphones ensures that they do not put too much weight on the ears. If you wear headphones for several hours at a time then you want something that is not going to make your ears too hot and not going to give you too much discomfort.

The simple headband design is lightweight and durable. It has a soft genuine leather band that sits on top of your head to keep the headphones stable. Weighing in at just 8.3 ounces, you will be quite surprised at how light they are, especially considering their substantial size.

AKG-K702-4aIf there is one thing to complain about the AKG K702 headphones it is the lack of a travel case or a carrying bag. Although this has no bearing in the actual quality of the headphone itself, it would have been nice to have a decent bag or case for them. Considering that many people that purchase these will be carrying them around from the home to the studio, a nice case or bag would have been a good idea.

Last thoughts on the AKG K702 headphones

The K702 is a really comfortable headphone suited for serious audiophiles and professional studio workers. The quality of the sound they produce is very high across a very wide range of highs, mids and lows and all genres of music too.

The open-back design produces the amazingly spacious sound that really does sound like you are listening to a live concert rather than a headphone. The AKG K702 headphones are definitely a very good option and they provide a lot of quality and great value too.
