The Ultrasone HFI-580 is a closed back headphone that is ideally suited for drummers and people that play bass. They utilize the excellent S-Logic technology that is unique to Ultrasone headphones. For the serious bass-heads, these are certainly a good option to consider, although they do have their weaker points as well as their strong points too, and these will be mentioned in this review.

There are some very good headphones in the closed-ear range at this price bracket, so the Ultrasone HFI-580 did have their work cut out to compete with the high standards already available. In some ways they are right up there with the best, but there are a couple of areas where they could be better. What you can always expect from any Ultrasone headphone is a very durable design, and the HFI-580 is certainly no exception on that front.
On the aesthetic side of things, the Ultrasone HFI-580 does look very stylish. The brushed chrome on the black body really catches the eye. They certainly look like the quality headphone you would expect at this price, and for the most part they sound like it too. They are full sized cans with a closed back, so they do eliminate most of the external noise and they also do a pretty good job of keeping the internal noise inside the ear cups so other people can’t hear any noise leaking from them.
Sound quality of the Ultrasone HFI-580
As mentioned, the HFI-580 has heightened bass levels, and this can be great for certain genres of music. But the bass can be a little overpowering in some instances, and this is one area where they could find a better balance. It is not recommended that you use these with a mobile device such as an iPod or MP3 player as the quality of the sound you will hear will not be the best.
The circumaural design of the ear cups will surround the entire ear making an enclosed environment. You can keep all of the external noise out so you only hear what you want to hear, and others will not hear the music that you are playing also. This noise cancelling feature is ideal for some people as it will allow complete isolation so they can be used in public places without disturbing other people.
The S-Logic technology that is unique to Ultrasone headphones is used to create a natural surround sound and also to provide a low emission rate. The Ultrasone HFI-580 also incorporates design aspects that provides safer hearing, so if you listen to music through your headphones for long durations these can really help to provide that safe environment for your ears.
A lot of headphones produce low frequency magnetic fields from the drivers in the headphone. Ultrasone uses a shielding technology they call ULE (ultra low emissions), and this technology can reduce radiation emissions by up to 98%. This technology was originally designed for professional headphones due to the length of time that most Pros wear them. But it has been so successful that it is now used in regular models such as the HFI-580.
The cable on the HFI-580 is about 10 feet long. While this may benefit some people, it will also be a bit of a pain for others. It is a bit too long and you will likely end up with slack cable all around the floor. The headband is fairly soft and is comfortable for the most part, it does get a little hot after a while. As the headphones are fairly big they do get a little heavy after a few hours of wearing.
Overall, the Ultrasone HFI-580 headphones do have a couple of areas that could be improved on. But the sound quality is very good, especially if you like to listen to music with a lot of bass. The style of these headphones is very sleek too. They also fold away nicely so if you need to take them around with you they will fold away and fit nicely in the carrying bag that comes with them.
